The Challenge
The homeowner had noticed deteriorating plaster and persistent musty odours on the ground floor for over two years. Previous attempts to treat the problem with DIY products had failed. Our survey revealed that the original slate damp-proof course had broken down entirely, allowing moisture to rise over 1.2 metres up the internal walls. The property's listed status required a sensitive approach that preserved the character of the building.
Our Solution
We installed a new chemical damp-proof course by injecting a silicone-based DPC cream into the mortar beds at low level. All affected plaster was removed back to bare masonry, and the walls were replastered using a salt-retardant render system to prevent future staining. We worked closely with the conservation officer to ensure the external pointing was repaired using a lime mortar appropriate for the building's age and listed status.
The Result
Follow-up moisture readings taken at 3 months and 12 months confirmed that the rising damp had been completely arrested. The homeowner was delighted with the quality of the replastering and the dramatic improvement to the living spaces. The work carries our 20-year guarantee.
