What is Rendering?
Rendering is the application of a protective and decorative coating to the external walls of a building. It serves two essential functions: shielding the underlying masonry from rain, frost, and wind erosion, and improving the appearance of the property. In the context of damp proofing, rendering plays a critical role because the external wall surface is the building's first line of defence against penetrating damp.
Sussex's coastal and downland climate exposes buildings to significant wind-driven rain, salt spray, and freeze-thaw cycles. Cracked, hollow, or poorly applied render is one of the most common causes of penetrating damp in the region. Once water gets behind the render, it becomes trapped between the render coat and the masonry, accelerating decay and causing internal damp problems that can be difficult to diagnose.
The choice of render system depends on the building's construction, age, exposure, and aesthetic requirements. Traditional lime render is essential for period properties built with soft brick, flint, or lime mortar, because it is flexible, breathable, and allows moisture to evaporate from the wall. Cement render is harder and more weather-resistant but is not suitable for older buildings where it can trap moisture and cause damage to soft masonry beneath.
Modern polymer-modified and silicone render systems offer excellent weather resistance, colour retention, and self-cleaning properties, making them a popular choice for contemporary homes and refurbishment projects. These through-coloured finishes eliminate the need for periodic repainting and provide a clean, durable exterior for decades.

Signs You Need Rendering
- Visible cracks, crazing, or hollow areas in existing render
- Render detaching or falling away from the wall in patches
- Damp patches on internal walls that correspond to external render defects
- Green algae, moss, or lichen growth on the rendered surface
- Staining, discolouration, or paint peeling on the external walls
- Exposed brickwork or masonry where render has failed
Our Approach
We assess the existing render and the underlying masonry to determine the correct specification. For period properties, we use traditional hydraulic lime renders (NHL 3.5 or NHL 5) applied in multiple coats to provide a breathable, flexible finish that is fully compatible with the building's original construction. For modern properties, we offer cement-based renders, polymer-modified renders, and premium silicone render systems from manufacturers such as K Rend and Weber.
Preparation is key to a lasting render finish. We remove all defective material back to sound masonry, rake out joints where necessary to provide a mechanical key, treat any underlying damp or decay issues, and apply appropriate primers and base coats. For external wall insulation projects, we apply the render system over the insulation boards with a reinforcing mesh to create a seamless, crack-resistant finish.
We offer a full range of textures and colours — from smooth float finishes and traditional roughcast to modern scraped and silicone textured coats. All our rendering work is carried out by experienced, time-served plasterers who understand the specific requirements of Sussex buildings. We provide clear quotations, protect surrounding areas during the work, and leave a clean, professional finish that enhances both the appearance and weather resistance of your property.

What Our Customers Say
“Had the whole front of our house re-rendered after the old cement render was trapping moisture and causing damp inside. The new lime render looks fantastic and the internal damp has completely gone. The team were tidy and professional every day.”

“Our 1960s detached house had a persistent damp problem on the gable end wall caused by cracked pebbledash rendering. The team stripped back the old render and applied a breathable silicone system that looks much better than the original. Inside, the damp patches have completely dried out. Excellent workmanship from start to finish.”
